Browns top Chargers for second home win in a row

Browns top Chargers for second home win in a row

CLEVELAND -- Rookie Trent Richardson rushed for 122 yards and scored a touchdown, leading the Cleveland Browns to a soggy, wind-whipped 7-6 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

Richardson, pulled last week against the Indianapolis Colts when he was ineffective because of a rib injury, carried 24 times as the Browns (2-6) won their second consecutive game at home -- and first for new owner Jimmy Haslam. Richardson scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter, and the Browns were able to hang on despite not generating much offense in blustery, rainy conditions.

The Chargers (3-4) dropped their third in a row. They had a final chance, but quarterback Philip Rivers' pass was batted away by Browns cornerback Buster Skrine with 1:24 left.

Rivers finished 18-of-34 passing for 154 yards but had a potential touchdown pass dropped by Robert Meachem in the third quarter.

Chargers’ offense starts fast, then slows down

Chargers coach Norv Turner may be coaching for his job tonight against the Chiefs, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Turner came out doing what he does best: He called a great first series on offense as San Diego marched down the field and scored on its opening possession.

Unfortunately for Chargers fans, it also shouldn’t be surprising that after the Chargers opened the game with a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown-scoring drive, then followed that up with a 12-play, 71-yard, field goal-scoring drive, Turner’s team has struggled to put the Chiefs away.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw away a golden opportunity when Chiefs safety Eric Berry picked him off in the end zone just before halftime, and Chargers punt returner Eric Weddle cost San Diego a possession when he muffed a punt that the Chiefs recovered. Mistakes like that have plagued the Chargers all season, and tonight is no different.

Rivers, Chargers stick up for their coach after win

With head coach Norv Turner’s job security becoming an increasing question mark following three straight losses, the San Diego Chargers helped table any immediate concerns over Turner’s fate with a 31-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday night.

Quarterback Philip Rivers and linebacker Jarret Johnson each played key roles as the Chargers scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the hapless Chiefs. Rivers completed 18 of 20 passes for 220 yards with a pair of touchdown throws to Antonio Gates and Malcolm Floyd. Johnson sacked Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel in the endzone and forced a fumble that was recovered by Shaun Phillips for a touchdown.

San Diego Chargers: Robert Meachem Is Not Vincent Jackson | Bleacher Report

Robert Meachem is not Vincent Jackson. Obvious, isn’t it?

I never said he was a bad receiver, but he is just not the same guy.

Sooner or later, Philip Rivers will figure this out and stop with the underthrown jump balls to Meachem. Vincent Jackson was a jump-ball guy. Robert Meachem is not that guy.

They even catch the ball differently. Jackson uses his hands to catch the ball, rather than his body, which works out better in the air if you’re in a jump-ball situation. When you watch Meachem catch the ball, he uses his body to help him corral it.

Bottom line, Meachem needs to be led with the ball. If he gets it with some space around him, he can make something big happen.

Even so, it’s not like Rivers has much of a choice right now as far as when and how to get rid of the ball."

Chargers QB Philip Rivers to play Thursday - AFC West Blog - ESPN

Chargers QB Philip Rivers to play Thursday - AFC West Blog - ESPN: "By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

It’s safe this week for Philip Rivers to knock off some late preseason rust in a final tune-up before the start of the regular season.

U-T San Diego is reporting that Chargers coach Norv Turner said Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates will play some Thursday night at San Francisco. Usually, starters play extensively in the third preseason and little if at all in the final preseason game.

However, Rivers and Gates were held out of Friday's Minnesota game. The Chargers were without three starting offensive linemen, so keeping Rivers out was the smart move. Getting him some work against the 49ers is also the smart move, because it would not be wise for Rivers to face Oakland on Sept. 10 without the benefit of playing for three-plus weeks. "

San Diego Chargers: Why Malcom Floyd Is Team's Most Important Veteran | Bleacher Report: "After missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season last year, many can say that this is a "make it or break it" year for the Chargers.

It seems that Norv Turner is on the hot seat once again, as another missed playoffs will certainly be considered a bad season.

Let's face it. With so much talent on this roster, if the Chargers were to miss a third consecutive playoffs, fans won't be looking for Turner to return next year.

Of course, players must perform also, and we know that veterans like Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates and Eric Weddle are vital components to this roster. We all know the type of energy these guys will bring day in and day out.

Another important veteran this season is receiver Malcom Floyd and his contributions to the offense. His production on offense may be vital if the Chargers look to be in the top 10 in passing this season.

Without further ado, here is why Floyd should be talked about as one of the most important veterans heading into the 2012 season. "
